Unplug and Create: Finding Calm Through Mindful Crafting

Is it just me, or does the world seem to be moving faster and faster these days? If I’m not careful, I can get swept up in the endless scrolling — the headlines, the commentary, the constant noise. It’s overwhelming.

Yes, it’s important to stay informed, but sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to step away and unplug. We weren’t designed to be on screens 24 hours a day, letting algorithms decide what’s “important.” Our brains and nervous systems need quiet, creative rest — a reset from the world’s constant stimulation.

That’s why I’ve been intentionally slowing down and turning off the noise through mindful creativity. For me, the simplest way to find calm is by creating something with my hands.

The Restful Rhythm of Cross-Stitch

Lately, I’ve been drawn to the peaceful rhythm of cross-stitch, one of my favorite handmade crafts. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching those tiny x’s slowly fill the fabric. I’ve never been great at completely turning off my thoughts, but when I’m stitching, my mind quiets. It becomes a space for reflection, peace, and prayer.

Did you know that when you create with your hands, you’re actually improving neural pathways, boosting memory, and releasing serotonin — the body’s natural “happy hormone”? It’s science’s way of saying that creating by hand is good for your mental health.

After spending time on a project, I feel calmer, happier, and more grounded — the exact opposite of how I feel after another “scroll session.”

Unplug and Create

If you’ve been craving rest or looking for stress relief, try slowing down with a creative hobby. Give your mind a place to breathe.  This is what slow living looks like: small moments of mindful creativity that restore peace to your day. This week, I challenge you to put away the distraction and pick up a project.
